The University held its Symphony Orchestra Annual Gala Concert on 18 April 2017 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

The Symphony Orchestra was conducted by its music director, Professor Johnny Poon, Head of the HKBU Department of Music, and the guest performer was world-renowned marimba player Ms Eriko Daimo.

The concert programme included Johannes Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, Op 80; Pius Cheung’s Princess Chang Ping, Concerto for Marimba; Peng Yenkai’s Dancing with Teresa Teng; and Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919).

Ms Eriko Daimo is one of the world’s leading marimbists. She has won top prizes in numerous competitions, including first prizes at the International Marimba Competition in Belgium, the Japan International League of Artists Competition, the Japan PAS 20th Annual Percussion Solo Competition, and the Japan Soloist Music Competition. Her recent performances include concerto performances with some of the world’s leading orchestras such as the RTE Ireland National Symphony Orchestra and the Tampere Philharmonic in Finland, as well as recital tours in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
